According to sources, LCD TV makers are making efforts to minimize power consumption in their systems, As the 4.0 and 5.0 versions under the Energy Star TV/VCR Program will come into effect on May 2010 and May 2012 respectively.
The maximum power consumption for version 4.0 is 78W (watt), 115W and 210W for 32-inch, 42-inch and 60-inch TVs respectively, while version 5.0 calls for 55W, 81W and 108W for the respective sizes.
LCD TV vendors and panel makers are developing new technologies to increase backlighting and panel efficiency and to reduce overall power consumption. The backlight unit (BLU) in a LCD TV uses up to 60% of the total power consumption, On Semiconductor said.
Environmental regulations are now a major issue that the display industry has to address, as failing to meet the requirements will prevent sales in some markets, makers indicated. But it remains a challenge for the industry to develop different products that meet different environmental requirements, and makers also need to develop their products before new regulations come into effect. |
